Nestbox Trails

Jenkins Trail~Hwy 124

Founded in 1985,  by Don Jenkins, Hatch & Judy took over the 50-box trail in 1996 and have increased it to 70 nestboxes. It features Western Bluebirds, Tree Swallows, Ash-throated Flycatchers, and several other resident cavity-nesters.

The trail is located on both sides of the highway on either side of Dry Creek Bridge between Plymouth and Ione in Amador County.

Schneider Cow Camp

Founded in 1996 by Hatch & Judy, in cooperation with Eldorado Natl. Forest, Amador District. In 2004, it consisted of 30 nestboxes. The two species nesting here are Mountain Bluebirds and Mountain Chickadees.

Climbing from 8100 feet to 9200 feet,  the trail starts at Schneider Camp which is 2 miles in from the Caples Lake Hwy Mtce Station on Hwy 88. It's in El Dorado County.

Caples Overlook Trail

After moving boxes several times in the Carson Pass area, in 2000, we settled on an area at timberline off Hwy 88 in Alpine County. Like Schneider, the birds using the 10 nestboxes are Mountain Bluebirds and Mountain Chickadees with occasional housekeeping by chipmunks and bumblebees.

The trail is at 8080' to 8240'. Like Schneider it affords spectacular scenery and wildflowers.
